Annual Pan-Hellenic Community Day
June 28, 2008
Pan Hellenic Committee Chairs: Soror Denyse Littles-Cullens (President of
local Pan Hellenic Council) and Soror Ogle Duff
The Pan Hellenic Council held it's Annual Pan Hellenic Community Day on
Saturday, June 28th on Meadows Street and as always, the Brothers of Omega
Psi Phi opened their Fraternity House to serve as the central location for
all the fun festivities. Each Sorority and Fraternity provided health
information and/or food and prizes for the attendees. The Ladies of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. passed out information about proper dental care
and dental supply samples. Alpha Alpha Omega Sorors also set up a station in
which people could get their blood pressure taken. Italian ice and ice cream
was served to keep everyone cool from the hot sun and the children enjoyed
pony rides as everyone lined danced and party walked to the sounds of the
DJ!
Brief History of Pan-Hellenic Council:
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is an umbrella organization for
nine historically black, international Greek lettered fraternities and
sororities. The nine NPHC organizations are collectively referred to as the"Divine Nine" as coined by Lawrence Ross. The founding members of the NPHC
were Omega Psi Phi, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta,
and Zeta Phi Beta. The council's membership expanded as Alpha Phi Alpha
(1931), Phi Beta Sigma (1931), Sigma Gamma Rho (1937), and Iota Phi Theta
(1996) joined this coalition of Black Greek letter organizations (BGLOs).
